I hope you have managed to stay safe and well! We focus on resolving tax issues in Prince William County and throughout the lower Northern Virginia area.
During the spring, both the IRS and Treasury announced that the deadline to file your 1040s AND PAY your individual federal income tax for the tax year of 2019 (without penalties and interest) had been extended to July 15, 2020. However, the usual extensions (Forms 4868 for individual returns and 7004 for most business returns). granted by timely filing the forms requesting an automatic extension granted the extensions to the deadlines of prior years, September 15th and October 15th, respectively.
Many states grant automatic extensions with the filing of the federal form, so if you filed an extension prior to the modified tax deadline (July 15, 2020), you likely received an automatic extension for your state tax returns as well.
If you feel as though you cannot file your return by September 15, 2020 (Partnerships and S Corporations), and October 15, 2020 (Individual Tax Returns and C Corporations) I can help you file an extension for time to file beyond the requisite deadline. However, the tax return extension beyond the aforementioned dates is not automatic, and is granted by the IRS on a case by case basis.
If you are due a refund, I encourage you to file as soon as possible so you can get that timely cash influx into your account as early as possible.
I know this year has been nothing short of tragic/weird all rolled into one, but for a time it seemed as though the tax deadlines would never truly arrive. But with less than 15 days left to comply with the extension deadline for some taxpayers, and less than 45 days for others, the clock is definitely counting down.
